The Rhodopes are a mountain range in central south Bulgaria and northen Greece. Some of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Bulgaria are located in the Rhodopes Mountain. Lush meadows in great green colors, alternate with dark coniferous forests, steep cliffs and picturesque canyons. Additionally the karst areas with deep river gorges and large caves are particulary notable.

The Rhodopes have a rich cultural heritage including ancient Thracian sites such as Perperikon, Tatul and Belintash. Also they are home of medieval fotresses, churches and monasteries. Finally, the picturesque villages with traditional Bulgarian architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, are in perfect harmony with the unique mountain scenery.

If there is a destination, which is worth visiting in every season of the year, then this is certainly the Rhodopes Mountain.

Rhodopes Mountains are worth visiting throughout the year. Winter is the season of Kukeri masquerade games and the famous Ribnovo village wedding traditions. Also, you can enjoy the snowy forest from the cozy guesthouses, serving traditional Rhodopes cusine.

In the Spring season best time to visit is from the mid April till mid June. Then nature is blooming and weather conditions could be dramatic!

During the Summer in addition to the nature wonders explorations, you can visit some of the festivals in the region. For example some of the famous are the Rhozhen gathering, Mysteries of Orpheus foklore festival, 100 Rhodope Bagpipes and many more.

The best time for Autumn foliage photos is from the mid October till mid November.  Then morning mists are frequent and tree’s colors are exploding!
