Every Winter the Bulgarian land is trembling from the Kukeri dances. Towns & villages are wakening by their rhythmic ringing bells. Masked groups are dancing, driving away evil and welcome a healthy and prosperous year to come. Therefore joining a Kukeri Bulgaria photo tour with us is an unique adventure.

These pagan traditions are dated back to the 5^th century. Furthermore, they survived the Christian influences, Ottoman Empire rule and the troubling days of communism. Now, Kukeri masquerade traditions are part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. As a result, they are the most popular Winter events in Bulgaria.

The most famous is The International Festival of Masquerade Games “Surva”. It is taking place annually in Pernik town. During the festival thousands of Survakari, Kukeri, Babugeri, Startsi, Jamalari and many more are gathering. In fact, they represent all regions of Bulgaria. Finally, a lot of groups from abroad are also coming. The aim is to show unique masks, costumes and rituals. We will interact with the participants along the parade routes. Also, we will be able to contact them behind the stages. Since 2014, Pernik and the Surva festival are in the National Geographic magazine’s ranking of the World’s top Winter destinations.

Another smaller and not overcrowded Kukeri festivals are organized in many other towns and villages. Every one of them has his own unique flavor and spirit.
